By Kim Maurer The Glitz. The Glam. The Fashion. Hollywood’s biggest night is just around the corner. The 2012 Oscar Nominees List is a mixture of Oscar veterans like Meryl Streep, for “The Iron Lady,” and newcomers like Rooney Mara, for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Hollywood A-listers such as George Clooney, for “The Descendants,” and Brad Pitt, for “Moneyball,” earned Best Actor nods. “Bridesmaids” fan-favorite, Melissa McCarthy, is up for Best Supporting Actress. Bradley Alan, a 27-year-old law student at NYU, found the Best Supporting Actor nominees to be surprising, yet refreshing. “I thought it was interesting that Jonah Hill was nominated. He gave a great performance in Moneyball, and is definitely deserving of the recognition. I don’t think he will end up winning, but it was nice to see someone like him get nominated,” said Alan. “Hugo” and “The Artist,” with 11 and 10 nominations respectively, are most likely to own the night. Because “The Artist” is a modern silent movie, shot in black and white, it could be the dark horse of the awards show. With nine nominees for Best Picture this year, there are more potential winners than usual. Laura Ellman, a 25-year-old from Long Island, NY, does not always tune into the awards show, but she is a big fan of the red carpet pre-show. “I love all of dresses that Brad Goreski, from “The Rachel Zoe Project” show, chooses for the celebrities that he styles. Anne Hathaway is one celebrity whose dresses never disappoint me,” said Ellman. In true Hollywood fashion, the winner for Best Actress will be as much remembered for her dress choice and acceptance speech, as she is for her role that earned her the Oscar. Past winners, such a Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, and Halle Berry have all made heartfelt speeches, as well as memorable fashion statements. Evelyn Crommett, a jeweler from Los Angeles, CA, looks forward to seeing the red carpet looks. “I like it when the actresses take chances and wear different designers every year. And, as a jeweler, it is fun to see beautiful people wearing such beautiful jewelry,” said Crommett. When it comes to Oscar fashion, certain names come to mind. Rachel McAdams will get a chance to show off her glamorous side this year, since “Midnight in Paris” has been nominated for Best Picture. Last Year’s Best Actress winner, Natalie Portman, showed off her baby bump in a stunning deep purple gown. Past Best Actor winners like Tom Hanks and Sean Penn, have set the standard for all actors to come. Winning an Oscar remains the ultimate honor for an actor or actress. The prestigious award is not easy to come by with so many memorable performances in film year after year. The bar continues to be set higher and higher and this year’s winners are not expected to disappoint. The 84th Annual Academy Awards will be aired on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on ABC, and will feature all of the past year’s best in films, as well as the always-anticipated red carpet dresses.
